Kitted Out
Despite some of the matches frustratingly airing on Fubo, I’ve truly enjoyed beginning summer watching these early Euro matches. Of course, we recorded this episode prior to the first match between Scotland and Germany, but that didn’t stop us from breaking down some of our favorite kits. Here’s a brief clip we put on Instagram:
While my favorites this year are most definitely the away kits from France, I’ll still be cheering on my Scots. Even if they’re not going to make it out of the group stage.
Did Millennials kill dinner parties?
Sure, I like to fantasize about having Frasier-esque dinner parties where I’m disposing of lobster claws and champagne bottles after my friends come over. But the reality of it is that no one is really having dinner parties anymore — and Gen-Z may actually be trying to change that.
Here’s an excerpt from Bon Appétit:
Dinner parties are not exactly new, nor is the basic, human desire to connect with others. But these days, we’ve found ourselves lonelier than ever. According to a 2023 report from the Surgeon General, we’re in an “epidemic of loneliness and isolation.” People aged 15 to 24 are spending the least amount of time with each other, leading some to call Gen Z “the loneliest generation.” In a 2023 Pew Research Poll, less than a third of respondents under 30 said they had five or more close friends. Faced with isolation, young people across the country, particularly women, are using social media to organize dinners, brunches, and drinks meetups in hopes of making friends—or at the very least, feeling less alone.
This also drove us into a discussion surrounding afternoon visits, but it mostly made us come to the realization that we’ve totally dropped the ball as a generation. Time to be better.
“Name three songs.”
At a restaurant last winter, I wore a washed out black t-shirt with a surfer catching a wave on it. When I walked in, the hostess immediately asked me, “Do you surf?” Based on her beachy hair and tan skin, I knew my answer would ruin her.
It did.
Then she asked, “Well do you know who the surfer is?” with an innocent tone.
“I don’t.”
I hung my head and cried into my tiki drink once we sat down. I had appropriated surf culture.
This week, however, we talked about Gen-Z’s affinity for “vintage” tees and apparel — but it’s mainly just one Nirvana tee from Urban Outfitters. From GQ:
“Every single one of the kids—the boys, the girls, even some of the moms—had this sweatshirt,” the costume designer recalls, still reeling these many months later. In particular, the capitalism and Kurt Cobain of it all didn’t sit quite right. “It got to the point where I hated [this sweatshirt] so much that I had to lie and say that the legal team at Netflix wouldn't let me put it in the movie, because so many of the kids wanted to wear it. I was like, ‘Oh, we don't have the clearance for this band.’” As Scheinberg saw it, Gen Z regarded band shirts as little more than zesty—or even neutral—graphic tees.
